Tony Mowbray ‘to target’ Alan Browne as Blackburn join Championship interest | OneFootball

Lancashire Telegraph reports that Blackburn Rovers are among the Championship clubs considering a move for Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne, with Tony Mowbray interested after returning to Ewood Park as head coach earlier this summer.

Browne, 31, has drawn widespread second-tier interest due to his extensive experience at the level.

He featured regularly for Middlesbrough following a deadline-day loan to the Riverside last summer, at one stage winning the Championship player of the month award. A return has been viewed as unlikely this summer, with Middlesbrough prioritising other midfield targets.

That stance has alerted rivals, and the midfielder is expected to leave Sunderland later this summer. No deal is advanced at this stage.

Browne has travelled to the USA with his Sunderland team-mates and started the opening pre-season friendly against York City. He is expected to have a prominent role in upcoming fixtures against Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham during Granit Xhaka's absence.

Xhaka is on a summer break following his World Cup commitments and will rejoin Sunderland before the friendly with RC Lens.

Browne has one year left on his Sunderland contract. The Black Cats are unlikely to demand a significant fee, but will seek a loan or permanent package that improves their position and reflects his pedigree.
