Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou admits Liverpool were far too good for his side as they were hammered 4-0 at Anfield to exit the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham led 1-0 in the tie going into the second leg but goals from Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk ensured Liverpool comfortably made it through.

And Postecoglou offered a damning assessment of the defeat.

“Ultimately Liverpool fully deserved the victory tonight,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

“They were the far better team. We just weren’t able to get a grip on any part of the game, defensively or with the ball and they were too good for us.

“We allowed them to get into the game and weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be.

“I just think we didn’t start the game off on the right footing and allowed them to get comfortable and once they got comfortable, it was very difficult for us to then wrestle that control back.

“We definitely needed to be braver with and without the ball but it’s easier said than done in a place like this against a very good Liverpool team at the moment who are in a good spell of form and are very settled.

“It’s what we needed to do and we didn’t do it.”

Cody Gakpo got the first before half-time and Mo Salah added the second from the penalty spot in the second half after goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky had brought down Darwin Nunez.

Dominik Szoboszlai added a deserved third for Arne Slot’s side before Virgil van Dijk completed the scoring with a trademark header.

“To give them a second goal was disappointing,” Postecoglou continued.

“I still think we never really got to grips with any part of the game today and they were too good for us.

“Very disappointed. We had a great opportunity and unfortunately we didn’t grab it.”
