Inter Miami defeated the New York City FC on Wednesday night. With a rough start, the Herons found the way to unlock the 0-0 and score the first goal at the end of the first half.
Once again, Inter Miami fans need to thank Lionel Messi for helping the team qualify for the MLS playoffs. With plenty of changes in the starting lineup, the players could adjust to Javier Mascherano’s expectations.
Mateo Silvetti and Baltasar Rodriguez proved once again that they need minutes. The Argentinian manager is still trying to figure out the ideal defense, but the Falcon and Allen duo step up for this occasion.
I don’t know how the season will end for Inter Miami, but if Lionel Messi doesn’t win the MLS MVP Award, it would be outrageous. Not just by the stats, the MVP should be given to the player who has the best and most impact on his team.
And that’s the definition of what Messi does with Inter Miami. The Herons’ captain scores goals, delivers assists, and makes the squad play football.
What we saw on Wednesday night was incredible. With a rough start, missed passes, and bad controls, the 38-year-old legend overcame adversity and changed the game.
To understand this, consider the fact that Lionel Messi contributed directly to three of the four goals of the night. Firstly, with a beautiful assist to Baltasar Rodriguez, and then with two goals to end the game.
In constant movement, the former FC Barcelona player became a problem for NYC FC's defense. They couldn’t stop him.
I know Lujan has been the starting right center-back next to Falcon, but what we witnessed at Citi Field should change Javier Mascherano’s thoughts.
In the world of soccer, having a left-footed player as the left center-back and a right-footed player as the right center-back solves many tactical aspects.
To begin with, the build-up from the back. By having your center-backs on their natural side, the potential pass between the lines or the clearance becomes much easier than if they were on their weaker foot.
Also, against NYC FC, Maximiliano Falcon felt more comfortable and could cross the field with much more ease than if he were on the left side.
Moreover, Noah Allen is emerging as a dependable defender. Given the shortage of left-footed players, he would be an ideal choice for the number six role, strengthening the connection between defense and midfield.
Inter Miami claimed victory on Wednesday night against New York City FC. The defensive partnership of Falcon and Allen provided stability for the Herons, while Lionel Messi's MVP-level performance ensured the win.
