Enzo Maresca’s press conference after the game against Fulham on Saturday was interesting.

The Chelsea boss covered a number of topics, including the injury to Liam Delap and the strop that Enzo Fernandez had at the end of the first half and the fact his team had conceded just one goal in 3 games.

Maresca praises defenders – but calls out Acheampong

Enzo Maresca speaks in a press conference after the Fulham win.

There’s good news at the back for Chelsea. Maresca was asked about Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah keeping a clean sheet, but ended up praising (sort of) Josh Acheampong, his other fit option at the back:

“Josh [Acheampong] also was very good against Palace. He needs to make mistakes to improve. Against Palace, the goal that we conceded from free-kick, the one that the referee disallows, is from Josh that lost the ball.

“But it’s part of the process if we want to build him and improve him. And we are happy with Josh. Tosin is doing fantastic from last season. Trevoh, exactly the same since coming back in January. And we have now finally Wes [Fofana] back, that is another one that can help us after the international break.”

It’s funny, Maresca is always reluctant to praise anyone without chucking in some criticism too – just like last week when he tempered praise for Estevao Willian by pointing to his mistake that led to the West Ham goal.

Chelsea’s defence gears up for tough season

With Fofana and Benoit Badiashile due back in a couple of weeks, we may be through the worst of things in defence. All of these guys have a chance to show what they can do with Colwill missing for most (if not all) of the season and Chelsea clearly reluctant to buy anyone else in that position.
