Since transferring from Lyon back in late January 2022, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães has been a loyal footsoldier to Newcastle United. But our sources now report the 28 year old has begun looking for a new home, and will be seeking an uncoupling from the Tyneside squad.
By some standards, four years at a club is a veritable eternity.
Guimarães arrived smack dab in the middle of the COVID-impacted 2021-22 season, but made an immediate impact by scoring five goals in the 17 game stretch.
Newcastle were a strict middle-table side at that time, but improving since the appointment of Eddie Howe as manager in November 2021.
In his first full season with the Magpies, Guimarães played 40 games across all competitions, missing six matches due to injuries to his ankle and hamstring, but still earning 5g/5a. Newcastle reached their first final since 1999 when they played Manchester United for the Carabao Cup, losing 2-0. They also qualified for the Champions League for the first time since the 2003/04 season.
Over the next two seasons Guimarães appeared in a whopping 97 fixtures across all competitions, recording over 8,200 minutes of playing time. He scored 12 goals and made 18 assists. He was made club captain in August 2024, which he remains currently.
The club won their first major trophy in decades lifting the Carabao Cup in 2025 after defeating Liverpool 2-1 . This season, before he was sidelined with a hamstring injury back in February, he generated 9g/7a.
Guimarães is a top box-to-box player, usually playing as a hybrid no. 6/8 in the center of the pitch. His style of play combines workrate, physicality, intelligence, and flair. He’s equally adept at making a crunching tackle or a visionary through-ball. Some compare him to Rodri or Declan Rice. Though he lacks the defensive nous of the former and the sheer playmaking audacity of the latter, he’s still a “complete” midfielder and would be a valuable addition to any team.
At this time, we hear Chelsea and Manchester United are the two Premier League clubs who would be interested. But there’s also engagement from European clubs as well, particularly Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. At 28, he’s in prime form with some good years left in his legs. He is Newcastle’s highest paid player (now that Alexander Isak is gone), with a $214,000/week wage bill ($11.1m annually), so that will be a consideration. So too will his transfer fee; his contract is good through June 2028.
