A Dominic Solanke brace saw Tottenham Hotspur earn an unlikely point from 2-0 down against Manchester City, denting the visitors’ title hopes.
Rayan Cherki found the back of the net early on to grab his 9th goal of the season, before Antoine Semenyo joined him on the scoresheet before half-time to make it 2-0.
Solanke flipped the game on it’s head in the second half, with a scruffy finish in the 53rd minute before quite the opposite in the 70th, with an improvised effort that found the top corner.
The result sees Spurs pick up just their second point in their last four Premier League games, whilst Arsenal’s lead over Man City stands at six points.
After Arsenal’s statement victory over Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, Pep Guardiola’s side were in search of three points to keep on the leaders’ tails. A poor historic record suggested that this would be a tough game for Manchester City however.
With 11 minutes on the clock, the visitors made a dream start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pouncing on a lacklustre opening from the home side – something Spurs fans are a little too familiar with this season.
Yves Bissouma was dispossessed in the middle of the park before a lightning counter-attack in true Manchester City style saw Erling Haaland offload to Cherki, who’s smart finish found the far corner to silence the home crowd.
Tottenham continued to be cut open, with the Citizens smelling blood and looking to double their lead. Both Haaland and Cherki had chances to give their side daylight, whilst Tottenham were showing little signs of promise.
On the brink of half-time, Semenyo found a deserved City second. It was yet again Tottenham being victims of their own downfall after Radu Drăgușin the ball away cheaply.
The visitors were ruthless once more, with the January signing finding the back of the net with a composed finish.
Thomas Frank’s side looked down and out in the first period, but a goal to half the deficit 8 minutes into the second half gave Spurs a lifeline.
It was brilliant play from Solanke, to hold off Abdukodir Khusanov, before a battle with Marc Guéhi saw the striker get the final touch to poke home. Game on.
Despite Manchester City’s dominance in the second half, the home side were the ones threatening and playing with greater intent and intensity. It wouldn’t be long before Spurs were rewarded.
This was one of if not the best goal you will see this season – an unbelievable finish from Solanke.
Conor Gallagher did tremendously well to win the ball back and then deliver, with the former Bournemouth striker’s scorpion kick looping over Gianluigi Donarumma into the top corner.
Spurs had the momentum and weren’t going to settle for a point, forcing the Manchester City goalkeeper into a couple of crucial saves.
The visitors felt they had unfinished business too, with Haaland and Tijani Reijnders having half-chances. It felt as if anything could happen in this game with so many twists and turns.
After nine minutes of additional time in North London, the game was finally settled at 2-2 after a thrilling affair.
