Tottenham Hotspur have reached a full agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.

Spurs were interested in van Hecke at the request of manager Roberto De Zerbi, who was eager to reunite with the player he previously coached on the South Coast.

The 26-year-old Netherlands international had entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Amex Stadium, leaving Brighton with a decision to cash in or risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

After rejecting two earlier offers from Tottenham, Brighton have now accepted a £52 million bid for Van Hecke, who has already agreed personal terms ahead of his move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This transfer is separate from Brighton’s ongoing interest in Tottenham’s teenage prospect Luka Vuskovic.

While reports linked the two deals, negotiations for Van Hecke progressed independently, ensuring the Dutch defender’s move is unaffected by Vuskovic’s potential future status.

Van Hecke is currently representing the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup. During the Oranje’s 2-2 draw with Japan, he delivered a composed performance, completing 92% of his passes and winning all five duels.

His tactical intelligence and ball-playing skills were hallmarks of his time under De Zerbi at Brighton, and Spurs now expect him to anchor their backline as they look to rebuild from a difficult 2025–26 campaign.

Van Hecke joins a defensive overhaul that already features free-agent signings Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.

With long-serving defender Cristian Romero expected to depart, the arrival of the Dutchman provides an immediate solution for a backline undergoing significant change.

By securing a Premier League-proven player already familiar with De Zerbi’s system, Tottenham have moved quickly to ensure they start the new season with a stronger defensive foundation.
