Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Spurs acted swiftly and decisively to finalise a landmark £85 million deal for the highly coveted youngster, beating heavy competition from Manchester United.
Fernandes has signed a long-term contract following his medical, becoming the marquee addition of a dramatic summer overhaul under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Speaking to the club’s official website after his unveiling, Fernandes revealed that a personal conversation with De Zerbi was the catalyst behind his decision to move to North London.
“I’m very excited for this next step,” Fernandes said.
“Spurs is a massive club, and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.
“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.
“I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the club.”
De Zerbi’s high-intensity, possession-based system relies on press-resistant central midfielders with both technical elegance and defensive steel.
Fernandes, a graduate of Sporting CP’s famed academy, perfectly fits this profile. Despite West Ham’s painful relegation last season, Fernandes was a standout performer for the Hammers.
Tottenham’s £85m deal for Fernandes comfortably eclipses the previous club-record fee paid for Dominic Solanke in 2024, underlining the financial backing De Zerbi is receiving.
With Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson already signed, and a deal for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali already agreed, Tottenham are leaving no stone unturned in their aggressive pursuit to climb up the Premier League table.
