Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan as they look to bolster their defence, according to journalist Alessandro Jacobone.
Spurs are already planning for a pivotal summer transfer window, and they have their sights set on the 28-year-old.
Tottenham’s interest comes as no surprise. First-choice Spurs left-back Destiny Udogies continues to be plagued by constant injury setbacks.
Djed Spence, a natural right-back, has been forced to deputise for the Italian on several occasions.
Tottenham have signed Souza, but he is not ready to make an impact at the highest level. They have enquired about Estupinan’s availability.
It is a deal to keep an eye on, given that the Ecuadorian star worked with Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs’ main target for their managerial role, at Brighton & Hove Albion.
De Zerbi lauded him as ‘very smart’ and said he can become ‘one of the best left-backs in the world’.
Estupinan arrived in Italy this summer for around £20 million, but is below Davide Bartesaghi in the pecking order.
He may consider leaving the Serie A giants if the opportunity arises.
Estupinan is a solid, tireless full-back with a wicked cross. He can provide cover for Udogie and potentially usurp his place in the team.
However, the more intriguing element of this pursuit is what it says about Tottenham’s priorities. Left-back is hardly their most pressing issue.
The goalkeeping situation remains uncertain, the lack of a reliable defensive midfielder continues to leave them exposed, and there are deficiencies in attack.
Estupinan may be a good addition, but unless Spurs address the spine of the team, these peripheral upgrades risk papering over cracks rather than fixing the foundations.
