Tottenham have a lot of work to do in the summer 2025 transfer window, and their biggest priority should be revamping the midfield. Former Chelsea box-to-box maven Conor Gallagher appears to be back on Tottenham's transfer radar.
Although Tottenham's 2025 summer transfer wishlist may come into better focus once there is a clear understanding of the club's manager next season, it makes sense for Daniel Levy and the club to start sorting out their priority targets based on price and expected contributions. More affordable, known commodities could be the name of the game for Spurs.
According to a report from Dean Jones and Danny Rust of GiveMeSport, Tottenham are keeping in mind the possibility of asking LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid for Conor Gallagher as a makeweight for either their own center midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur or Atleti's priority target Cristian Romero.
GiveMeSport also report that Tottenham continue to admire Gallagher as a player, which has been the case for quite some time. An issue, though, is that Gallagher is reportedly enjoying his time with the tertiary title contenders in Spain and isn't currently interested in returning to the Premier League.
Still, Tottenham could convince Gallagher and Atletico Madrid otherwise. Gallagher has traits that Tottenham are looking for in midfield, namely a robust work ethic as a ball-winner and progressor. Although Chelsea fans wanted to get rid of Gallagher because he wasn't a controller or at the technical level of others (a point Gallagher denies), he is actually a decent creator with seven assists for Chelsea in the 2023/24 season.
The 25-year-old Gallagher isn't an expensive option, but if used as a makeweight in a swap deal, the amount of cash Tottenham would get in return would be minimal. And Spurs need cash to fill other needs in the squad. Gallagher had a decent first season with Atleti, but he wasn't an important player who started every game and had worse numbers than what he posted at Chelsea.
There are worse options out there than Gallagher, and Tottenham do need a midfielder with the energy and athleticism that Gallagher has. But they need someone at a higher technical level. The same reasons that pushed Chelsea away from Gallagher could be what make someone else a better option.
