Spurs captain has publicly hit out at club twice in past month
Thomas Frank has revealed that he has “no idea” whether Cristian Romero will be at Tottenham next season.
Club captain Romero was spoken to internally by Frank after criticising Spurs on social media on Monday for their lack of movement in the January transfer window.
He said it was “disgraceful” that Spurs “only had 11 players available” against City.
Spurs failed to bring in any senior signings on Deadline Day, signing 18-year-old Scottish striker James Wilson for the club’s Under-21s team on loan with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.
This is the second time in the space of a month that Romero has come under fire for criticising senior figures at Spurs after he avoided punishment for criticising the board following Spurs’ defeat to Bournemouth at the start of January.
In the wake of Romero’s post, rumours have resurfaced about the 27-year-old’s future.
Frank was asked whether he could be sure Romero, who signed a new contract until 2029 last summer, would stay at the club, but could not offer any assurances.
“That’s a question I have no idea about. Right now he is the captain, he has a long-term contract and we signed a new contract with him,” Frank told reporters.
Romero’s leadership has been called into question at times this season, with his needless sending off against Liverpool and his comments post-Bournemouth.
It feels increasingly as if Romero is Spurs captain out of necessity rather than on merit, and Frank admitted that there was still much he had to learn to develop as a leader.
“Leadership is many things. I’m 52 years old. I think I’m pretty good at leadership. Can I get better every single day? Yes. Do I make mistakes? Maybe not every single day, but probably weekly,” Frank continued.
“Romero is 27 years old. Is he still going to make mistakes going forward as a leader? Does he do a lot of good things? Yes.”
Romero’s post garnered plenty of support from fans, while Xavi Simons, Dominic Solanke, Djed Spence, Pedro Porro, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison were among the players to like the post.
Frank, though, does not agree that their likes equate to support for Romero’s criticism of the club and said the defender was not necessarily speaking on behalf of his team-mates.
“I think it’s one person speaking up. We don’t know if he speaks on behalf of all the players, that’s your perception so we don’t know that. That’s fair to say. That’s one thing.
“Secondly, we don’t know if that’s what he thinks. We can read into a text. I think we have a team and squad to compete but of course we have a few injuries that doesn’t help us.”
