Striker has two goals in three games since returning from troublesome injury

Thomas Frank expects Dominic Solanke to be in contention to make England’s World Cup squad if he stays fit this season.

Solanke, who scored off the bench as Spurs qualified for the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, has not played for England since November 2024.

However, Frank believes Solanke can add to the three caps he has already won and force his way back into contention for the World Cup.

“Of course it’s for Thomas Tuchel and his staff to take that decision in the end,” Frank told reporters on Friday.

“I think that Dom, 100 per cent fit, sharp and performing, should be in the mix.”

Solanke has hit the ground running since returning from a recurring ankle injury at the start of January, and has scored two goals in his last three games for Spurs.

Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins are nailed on to go to the World Cup, should they stay fit.

But with a rotating cast of strikers behind them who have struggled to make an impression this season, Solanke remains on Tuchel’s radar.

Frank continued: “I don’t know how many striker or clear No9s (England) want to bring, but he definitely should be in that mix. All his qualities are there to be selected for that.”

Solanke has, by Frank’s own admission, been pushed to the limit since returning from injury and was named on the bench against Frankfurt on Wednesday.

He's still building, but he's ready to start on Sunday

He is fit to start Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City, though, and Frank says he has been impressed by how quickly the former Bournemouth hitman has got back up to speed after netting in back-to-back Champions League games.

“It was so nice to have him back when he was through on goal,” Frank continued.

“It was so nice when Dom was through on goal that you just had that feeling, OK, this is a goal. And he just proved that.

“Like always, there's a lot of thought process and analysis behind every decision we try to make in team selection and on the pitch and all that.

“And of course, it's tough not to bring Dom [into the side] again in a very important game. But all signs, all my experience, told me that it's not the right thing to do that.

“Kolo [Muani] did very well and then he came on and killed the game for us. He's still building, but he's ready to start on Sunday.
