Postecoglou happy with resilient Spurs win over Man City

Two second-half goals from Dominic Solanke and a sublime James Maddison free-kick helped Tottenham Hotspur come from behind to overwhelm Aston Villa 4-1 and end the visitors’ seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Spurs climbed to seventh in the table on 16 points, two points behind Villa who stayed fifth, as they battled back in style in north London.

Unai Emery’s Villa led at half-time through Morgan Rogers, but Spurs were level soon after the break when Brennan Johnson tapped in at the far post.

Solanke’s two goals in four minutes, including a flowing team move finished off with a delightful dink over Emiliano Martinez, secured the win, before Maddison curled in a free-kick in stoppage time.

Poatecoglou reacts

Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to Sky Sports too, and he takes time to emphasise that Villa “are a very good side”.

“They have a level of performance that rarely drops.

“It was a tight first half, we had to match up with them and it was disappointing for them to score. After that, we have other gears in us and we showed that in the second half. After the performance in midweek I thought it was an outstanding effort.

“We stick to our principles, there is great belief in these players, and when we do that we are hard to stop. I felt the momentum was going our way, we knew we would finish strong and if we upped it a couple of gears like we can we knew we would be hard to stop.”

On James Maddison, he adds: “The game wasn’t going the way it had to go for me to bring Madders on. I say to the guys they are all there to make a contribution. Madders will be key for us.”

“Richarlison felt his hamstring and [Christian] Romero got a knock. We just have to deal with what we have to deal with. We have guys who can come in and were going to need that.”

McGinn reacts

Villa captain John McGinn has reacted to the defeat too, and he says that Villa have “got to keep our heads a bit in there and have some perspective”.

“Many teams will come here and suffer that defeat.

“It got loud. Probably as loud as I’ve heard it as an away player.

“It’s about staying positive. Spurs beat us 4-1 last season and we finished above them.

“They punished our mistakes. We had a chance at 2-1 to equalise. The third one was a mistake and then a great free-kick from the fourth.”

FULL-TIME! Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

Match-winner Solanke is the first to speak to Sky after the game, and he says that Spurs “always believe we can score goals”.

“It all came together in the second half.

“[It was] quite difficult in the first half, but at half-time we had time to regroup and discuss what we could do better,” he adds.

He says that it’s “been a few games without” a goal, and he’d “been trying to get that goal, so buzzing with that”.

“When we’re playing well, we can score many goals. Today showed that.

“We’ve had some great games but we haven’t managed to do it the whole season, which we think we’re capable of, so we have to try and put it right in the future.”

FULL-TIME! Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

A brillaint result for Spurs, all things considered (especially having gone behind). It’s a well-earned three points, with a scintillating second-half performance giving them the win.

Villa started well and it was all going in accordance with the gameplan until Son’s brilliant cross allowed Johnson to level, and from there it was Spurs who kicked on and deservedly got the win.

For Villa, they’ll wonder what could have been, but they faded badly in the second half after the equaliser, and they simply didn’t have enough today.

GOAL! Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

GOAL! The perfect finish for Spurs!

It’s a brilliant, cheeky effort from Maddison as he takes it quickly, bending it around the wall, and it creeps in at the near post. Martinez moved but there was no chance.
