Steven Gerrard claims Mikel Arteta is “being extremely clever” by sending Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Marseille.

The Gunners have been in talks with Marseille over a loan move for Nwaneri until the end of the season, performing a transfer u-turn in the process having initially planned to keep the attacking midfielder.

An agreement is believed to have been reached, with the 18-year-old spotted in France on Wednesday holding up a Marseille scarf and heaping praise on head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Manchester United left-back Harry Amass is expected to join Norwich on loan for the rest of the season.

The teenager spent the first half of the season with Sheffield Wednesday before being recalled earlier in the month, but is set for a swift return to the Championship.

Aston Villa explore Mateta deal

Aston Villa are interested in signing Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has informed Crystal Palace he wishes to leave this month.

Mateta’s contract at Palace runs until June 2027. He turns 29 this summer and is eager to play in the Champions League.

Villa are keen on improving their options in attack and had been working on a move for Tammy Abraham from Besiktas but there has been no breakthrough with that.

Standard Sport previously reported in August 2024 that Villa held an interest in Mateta. It went no further at that point and he remained at Palace where he went on to win the FA Cup under Oliver Glasner that season.

Manchester United-linked Roberto De Zerbi showed his “limitations” during Marseille’s Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

That is the view of French football journalist, Julien Laurens.

One of many names linked with the Old Trafford post is De Zerbi as he matches United’s reported requirements for a manager with Premier League experience following his time at Brighton.

However, speaking to TNT Sports after Marseille were beaten at home by Liverpool on Wednesday night, Laurens has questioned whether the Italian is good enough for Man United.

Chelsea set to sign Yisa Alao

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s 17-year-old left-back Yisa Alao, reports Dom Smith.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea are confident of getting the deal done after emerging as the frontrunners ahead of Manchester United, who are also keen on signing Alao and have held negotiations with the Championship’s bottom club.

The initial fee paid to Wednesday for the teenager is expected to be around £500,000, but add-ons could see the eventual fee surpass the £1m mark.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer is willing to return to Manchester to join Manchester United, according to Express.

Of course, Palmer is formerly of Manchester City and has been a bright spark for the Blues ever since his £42.5million move in September 2023.

The report states that the 23-year-old is 'homesick', hence being keen on a return to his roots. Although the sticking point is Palmer's contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2033.
