United States international Trinity Rodman has signed a new three-year contract with Washington Spirit on Thursday.

According to ESPN, her agent Mike Senkowski of Upper 90 Sports Group said she will earn more than two million dollars per season, about €1.7m, a figure unprecedented in the NWSL, making her the highest-paid player in the league and worldwide.

The deal was enabled by the HIP mechanism, nicknamed the Trinity Rodman rule, unveiled in December. It permits NWSL clubs to exceed the one million dollars salary cap to retain or attract select stars, based on criteria such as commercial appeal and individual honours.

Rodman’s previous four-year contract expired on 31 December and was estimated at $1.1 million per season, roughly €950,000.

The new terms exceed those of Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati, a triple Ballon d’Or winner, previously the top earner in the women’s game.
