Trolls aside, Neil Lennon merits his status as a Celtic legend | OneFootball

Former Celtic icon and current Dunfermline manager Neil Lennon was pictured enjoying himself at the recent Oasis gig at Murrayfield on Tuesday night, and it kickstarted a long drawn out debate on Celtic social media regarding his legacy at the club…

Some reckon Neil deserves to be shunned due to his ill-fated last season in the Celtic dugout which saw the collapse of our ten in a row dream with in what was a dire time on and off the park. Thankfully the majority see him as the legend he undoubtedly is due to the success he led the club to during his time as player and two spells as manager.

Folk are of course entitled to their opinion, and yes Neil did play his part in that ill fated campaign that saw us finish a country mile behind theRangers, thus finishing that season empty handed as our morale hit an all time low.

We did win the delayed Scottish Cup Final against Hearts which was played just before Christmas behind closed doors.  But that was just one campaign, and that one terrible year which seen football suffer due to a global pandemic as supporters were locked out doesn’t erase all the success that Neil led the club to as dogged and determined midfielder or a leading figure in the dugout.

Neil made just over 300 appearances for the club winning nine major honours including a treble, a double, and of course was part of the squad that reached the club’s first European final in 33 years.

He also had well publicised personal problems to put up with which resulted in genuine threats to his life all because of his religion. Most would be forgiven for bailing out the city never to return.

But Neil bravely stayed put before called time on his Celtic career by leading the side to a domestic double under Gordon Strachan in 2007. Not long after he was back as a coach before becoming the main man and was responsible for kickstarting a decade of major dominance in 2012, before leaving and then coming to our aid for a second spell as he helped the side equal a club record of nine titles in a row.

So there we have it. 300 plus appearances, nine major honours, the only man in Celtic history to win the treble as both player and manager. I’m sure that’s enough to confirm legendary status at the club don’t you?

It certainly been a bad week for trolls on social media, long may it continue.
