This season, Manchester City has been hit by injuries all season long. That trend remained both before and during Manchester City’s 2-all draw with Brighton at the Etihad yesterday. Ederson missed the game and Bernardo Silva had to be substituted with an injury concern in the second half. Pep Guardiola provided an update on the condition of the pair following yesterday’s match.
Speaking after his team’s draw with Brighton, Pep Guardiola was asked why Ederson missed yesterday’s match. City’s number-one keeper wasn’t included in the Manchester City matchday squad yesterday. He was also withdrawn from international duty with Brazil on Friday evening. When asked about Ederson’s condition Guardiola said: “It is something abdominal. He had niggles. At Nottingham Forest, he had a problem, and that’s why it happened.”
Bernardo Silva replaced Savinho in the 58th minute of yesterday’s match. He only lasted 18 minutes before he was then replaced by Phil Foden. Speaking on why Bernardo Silva was substituted Guardiola told the media: “He could not move properly. I need to speak with him. I was watching him for four, five minutes, and he could not make two steps properly, so in that moment, I decided not to take a risk.”
It now remains to be seen if Ederson and Bernardo Silva will be available for Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth. The hope is that they will be. Both players will have a crucial role to play in that match and in Manchester City’s chase to secure Champions League football for next season. A further update on the fitness of the pair won’t be known until after the upcoming international break.
