England under-21s extended their winning start to the European Championship qualifiers with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Andorra at Pride Park on Monday, thanks to Tyrique George’s first-half strike.
Lee Carsley’s side dominated possession throughout, registering 19 shots, but were made to work for the win by a resilient Andorran defence that sat deep and frustrated the Young Lions in the first half.
The breakthrough came in emphatic fashion on 41 minutes. Jamie Gittens, after weaving past two defenders down the left, found George in the box. The Chelsea forward produced an astonishing finish from a tight angle to give England a deserved lead.
Earlier chances had gone begging. Tyrique George nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute after a slick one-two with Rico Lewis, while Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens and Ashley Phillips also tested Marc De Castro, who pulled off a string of fine saves to keep Andorra in the contest.
A disallowed goal from Joshua King for offside and a close-range effort from Brooke Norton-Cuffy added to the drama before the opener.
The second half saw England continue to dominate without adding to their tally, but Carsley’s side controlled the game professionally and never looked in danger.
The win also secured a third consecutive clean sheet and propelled England to the top of Group D, two points ahead of Slovakia.
