UEFA, Real Madrid and EFC, the European clubs' association, have reached an agreement in principle that should end the breakaway European Super League project. The deal was struck on Wednesday afternoon, on the eve of the European body's congress in Brussels.
UEFA said in a statement that, after months of talks held in the interests of European club football, the accord respects sporting merit, prioritises the sustainability of clubs and aims to enhance supporters' experience through digital technologies.
Once those principles are implemented, the agreement would also allow outstanding legal disputes related to the European Super League to be resolved.
Real Madrid had been the last club still appearing to back the Super League, an abortive 2021 attempt to create a breakaway club competition.
Alongside A22, the club are seeking €4.5 billion in damages from UEFA for blocking the project in 2021.
