UEFA steps up fight against Gianni Infantino’s World Cup stake sale plan | OneFootball

UEFA has escalated its resistance to Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, issuing a new statement that confirms strong opposition and criticises FIFA’s methods.

According to The Times, FIFA has written to the 211 member federations with a 19 September deadline to back the proposal, offering 40 million dollars per federation from a 10 billion dollar fund, otherwise the fund would be 2.7 billion dollars.

After consultations with many stakeholders, UEFA’s statement says opposition to FIFA’s plan is significant and growing. It adds that the governing body should stop using the sport to enrich itself and its associates.

The European organisation also highlighted the deadline and the withdrawal of a one off payment offer as telling in themselves.

Several political figures have aligned with UEFA’s critique, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari. For now, only Czech federation president David Trunda has publicly supported the project.
