UEFA to speak to fans about playing league games abroad
UEFA has postponed its decision on whether to permit European domestic league matches to be played overseas, opting instead for a consultation period with all stakeholders, including fans.
The European football governing body considered proposals for La Liga's Villarreal v Barcelona to be played in Miami and Serie A's AC Milan v Como to be staged in Perth, Australia.
Fans' groups, notably Football Supporters Europe (FSE), have voiced strong opposition to these plans, comparing them to the controversial European Super League.
UEFA stated its desire to gather views from all parties before making a final ruling on this “important and growing issue”, acknowledging its responsibility to consider all factors.
While LaLiga and Serie A advocate for overseas matches to boost global exposure, the Premier League has confirmed it has no current plans to stage games abroad.
