Athletic president Jon Uriarte has reported a campaign of harassment and threats to the Ertzaintza, prompting emphatic condemnation from the club, former leaders and a rival from the June 2022 election. They called the incidents unacceptable, damaging to the institution and something that must be eradicated with collective help.

The club said in a statement that progress for society and for Athletic depends on insisting on respect, and it reiterated its rejection of any threat or intimidation intended to silence or restrict people.

Uriarte has provided written and video evidence with his complaint. This is not the first time he has been targeted, with insults in the street in 2024 amid a dispute with the most extreme sector of the Herri Harmaila after a match against Real Madrid at San Mamés.

On this occasion, those behind the threats went further, tracking his movements, confronting him again in public and entering the entrance hall of the building where he lives in Bilbao.

Former president Ana Urquijo said a small minority must not tarnish the name of Athletic or an exemplary support. Former candidate Iñaki Arechabaleta described the coercion and violence as a scourge that must be ended together.

Former president Fernando García Macua urged a forceful response from supporters and the pursuit of the perpetrators through the courts.
