The London is Blue podcast have been looking back at Chelsea’s win over Liverpool at the weekend, with a guest appearance by the Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law.
He couldn’t believe how good Romeo Lavia had been in the game, and how he may yet be the crucial factor that gets us back into the top 5.
Matt Law on the London is Blue podcast.
“I think I’ve probably actually forgotten how good [Chelsea] were earlier in the season with Lavia in there and how impactful he actually is to the team and the system and people around him.
“When Lavia came back at the end of the season, I kind of thought, well, that’s good, but I didn’t really think, oh, wow, that’s going to change Chelsea.
“And actually, I think you could be the man who just will have got them over the line in the end. I mean, I’ve always been confident they would get there, but I think Lavia is really, really giving them something extra.”

Amazingly, the stats sites didn’t love Lavia’s showing as much as most of us watching the game. SofaScore gave him a 6.9 rating, meaning there were 6 higher rated players than him on the Chelsea team alone.
You won’t find many fans who were in the stadium or even watching on TV who agree with that.
The numbers were solid 100% pass accuracy from 23 passes, 4 ground duels won of 7, possession lost just once, drawing 2 fouls and making 2 clearances, 2 tackles and an interception.
But so much of what he did didn’t show up in the numbers – the little pass to release Cole Palmer ahead of the first goal was one of the most crucial moments in the game and will only be recorded as a completed pass.
