Union Berlin head coach Steffen Baumgart has confirmed that midfielder Alex Kral’s move to Panathinaikos has collapsed. Kicker reported that the Greek outfit’s interest in taking the Czech midfielder on was waning yesterday.
The German publication nevertheless did note that Kral’s Bundesliga club might be interested in finding another taker for Kral before the current January transfer window closes.
That might still happen, but Baumgart’s words at his Thursday pre-match press conference suggested that that he had plans for Kral over the next six months. Kral has been among the players turning in effective performances for Baumgart off the bench recently.
Baumgart noted that Kral would be part of his matchday selection against Hoffenheim this Saturday.
“Alex will be in the squad,” Baumgart said. “He is one of our players. We gave him the opportunity to talk to another club [last weekend]. As is the case in football, sometimes it doesn’t work out. This turns out good for us. We have a player with a lot of quality who we still have here for another six months.”
