Newcastle United will be desperate to secure their first Champions League points of the season on Wednesday when they travel to Brussels to face Union Saint-Gilloise.
The match is the Belgian champions’ historic first-ever Champions League home game. The hosts are in formidable unbeaten form and will be looking for another famous scalp after their opening-day win at PSV Eindhoven.
The Belgian champions will be without midfielder Florucz, who is suspended following his red card on matchday one. However, creative midfielder Anouar Aït El Hadj is expected to be fit after a knock, giving manager Sébastien Pocognoli a near full-strength squad to choose from.
Eddie Howe is contending with a number of injuries, with Valentino Livramento, Jacob Ramsey, and Yoane Wissa all ruled out. Key defender Fabian Schär is expected to be fit to start despite a recent knock. Anthony Gordon, who scored their first European goal of the season, will be a key figure in attack.
The hosts are in sensational form, unbeaten in all competitions for over two months and sitting top of the Belgian Pro League. Their Champions League campaign began with a stunning 3-1 away victory at PSV, demonstrating their serious threat in this competition.
The Magpies are in a worrying slump. They have suffered two heartbreaking 2-1 defeats in their last two matches against Barcelona and Arsenal. In addition, they are winless in six competitive away games and have won just one of their last nine Champions League fixtures.
Union SG predicted XI: Scherpen; Mac Allister, Burgess, Leysen; Khalaili, Zorgane, Rasmussen, Niang; Aït El Hadj; Rodriguez, David.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; Guimarães, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon.
The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+ in the UK. Coverage begins at 5:15 pm BST.
