Union St Gilloise the big winners on matchday 27 in the Belgian Pro League

Union St Gilloise ended matchday 27 in the Belgian Pro League as the only side in the top six that managed to pick up three points. They rebounded from their disappointing European exit at the hands of Ajax during the week to grab a 2-0 win over city rivals Anderlecht. Union went to Lotto Park and handed the Mauves a 2-0 defeat, with goals from Anan Khalaili and the excellent Ousseynou Niang.

With Genk and Gent drawing 0-0, Antwerp throwing away three points late against OH Leuven at home and Club Brugge losing, it was only Union who earned themselves three points out of the top six. As a result, they close the gap on Club in second to just three points, while the gap to Genk is 12. However, with points halving in the play-offs, this would just be six points, not such an impossible hurdle to overcome. It would be ironic if Union were to win the league from this position, having squandered the opportunity to do so as the side with the points advantage in seasons past. The side could reduce the gap even further when they face Genk on the final day of the regular season.
