Dayot Upamecano has spoken out in support of Jonathan Tah after the defender received racist abuse following his penalty miss in Germany’s defeat to Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup.

The Bayern Munich centre-back revealed that he reached out to Tah after the game, expressing confidence that his teammate has the strength and mentality to overcome the incident.

“I’ve been in contact with him. I texted him after the game and I know he’s very strong. I’m totally happy to be able to play alongside him - he has a great mentality.”

Upamecano also defended Tah’s decision to step up for the penalty, praising the leadership qualities that prompted him to take responsibility in a difficult moment.

“He wanted to take that penalty because he’s always had that mentality. He’s very important for Germany and for FC Bayern.”

The France international went on to condemn the racist abuse directed at Tah, making it clear that such behaviour has no place in the game.

“I don’t understand why there are still such people - I don’t accept racism. But he shouldn’t concern himself with that. He just has to keep going and give it his all.”

Tah has received widespread support from teammates and fans in the wake of the abuse, with Upamecano’s comments adding to the growing backing for the Germany international as calls continue for stronger action against racism in football.
