In a recent post on X, journalist Pete O’Rourke offered an update on Sunderland and their pursuit of Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie. It has been revealed that the French club have rejected the opening offer from the Black Cats, but the two teams are still in talks to get a deal done for the talented full-back this summer.

Methalie’s Decent Form In Ligue 1

The 20-year-old caught the eye at times with his performances on the left side of Toulouse’s defence in the previous campaign. Methalie found the back of the net twice and picked up a couple of assists in 30 matches for the French club last season in various competitions.

The French talent is currently one of the most talented left-backs in Ligue 1. Therefore, it is no wonder that the Black Cats are keen on signing him later this year.

His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2030, which could make it tough for Sunderland to land him on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.

What Should Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris Do With Regards To Methalie?

Methalie is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and can contribute by scoring and creating a few important goals for his side from the left flank.

The French talent is primarily a left-back but can also fill in as a central defender or as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so by his manager. However, there are some question marks over whether he can cope with the physical demands and high intensity of the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to get a deal done for him later this year.

We can expect Methalie to enhance the quality of Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris’ defence. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting place at the Stadium of Light next season.

At 20, the future looks quite promising for Methalie as long as he continues to improve with each year. Hence, Le Bris should focus on launching another move for him in this transfer window.
