Sheffield Wednesday defender Michael Ihiekwe is looking to leave the club this month as he seeks first-team football elsewhere.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Ihiekwe is looking to leave the club in the January transfer window, with clubs from the Championship and League One keen on the defender.
The 32-year-old joined the Owls from Rotherham United in the summer of 2022, and he has gone on to make over 50 league appearances for the club since.
That included contributing as Darren Moore’s side won promotion back to the second tier, and he also featured 26 times as they preserved their status in the Championship in the previous campaign.
However, his game time has been reduced under Danny Rohl, and whilst fitness issues have restricted his impact, Ihiekwe has only made four appearances this season.
Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Football Insider have revealed the ex-Liverpool youngster is keen on a move in the winter window.
They state that Ihiekwe is simply looking for more first-team opportunities, and that there is interest from EFL clubs in the experienced centre-back.
Crucially, it’s also reported that Wednesday are open to letting the player leave, although they would need to receive a suitable offer.
Dominic Iorfa’s injury may mean Wednesday are reluctant to let Ihiekwe leave at the moment, but the reality is that he is still way down the pecking order under Rohl right now.
It’s just one of those things in football, with the German having preferred options, and the results show he has made the right call, as the club have made significant progress under Rohl’s guidance.
But, it will no doubt be frustrating for Ihiekwe, who will still feel he has a lot to offer, whether it’s in the Championship or in League One.
The interest in him is no surprise, as Ihiekwe is a powerful, strong defender, who can do the basics very well, and he is the sort of player that can help tighten a poor defence.
Given his age, the Owls are unlikely to demand a big fee for the player, so if the interest in the former Tranmere man does formalise in offers, you would expect a deal to be agreed.
From Wednesday’s perspective, it will free up space and funds in the squad as Rohl looks to add to the group over the coming weeks.
