A composed second-half display, capped by a moment of brilliance from Michael Olise, secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Bayern. Yet despite Olise’s decisive contribution, it was Urbig who emerged as the standout performer on the night.
Following Bayern’s 1-1 draw with PSG and their painful Champions League exit, Kompany opted to make another change between the posts, restoring Urbig in place of Manuel Neuer. The decision proved inspired, as the 22-year-old produced a string of impressive saves to frustrate Wolfsburg and preserve Bayern’s clean sheet.
Kompany was full of praise for his goalkeeper afterwards and also addressed the ongoing competition between Neuer and his potential long-term successor.
“This is our goalkeeping situation – and it’s excellent,” said the Belgian coach. “Both have performed very well for us in crucial moments. They’re also friends, so it’s a perfectly healthy situation all around.”
Urbig also revealed the support he received from Bayern’s experienced goalkeeping group after the final whistle.
“Ulle (Sven Ulreich) came straight over, Manu (Neuer) came straight over – and both congratulated me on my performance,” he said with a smile in his post-match interview.
Despite his heroics, the young goalkeeper was quick to acknowledge the challenge Wolfsburg posed throughout the contest.
“Wolfsburg played a fantastic game and gave it their all,” Urbig admitted immediately after the match, while also expressing his delight at receiving praise from TV pundit Lothar Matthäus.
“I’m simply happy when there are positive opinions about me,” added the former 1. FC Köln goalkeeper. “I train very, very hard week after week, so I only take it one day at a time.”
Urbig also insisted Bayern had little time to dwell on their Champions League disappointment in Paris.
“Wednesday was obviously very painful. But life goes on. We saw today that it’s a very difficult away game. Therefore, there wasn’t much time to think about Paris.”
Asked about speculation linking him with a place in Germany national football team coach Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup plans, Urbig made it clear his full attention remains on Bayern’s season run-in.
“Now we still have a home game in the league and the DFB Pokal final, unfortunately not the Champions League final. After that, I’ll think about the national team.”
