Valencia blow as Lucas Beltrán misses training before facing Athletic Club

Valencia’s Lucas Beltrán missed Wednesday’s training with persistent pain in his patellar tendon, and his chances of featuring against Athletic Club now appear very remote, according to Superdeporte.

The club’s footballing problems are being compounded by a spate of injuries.

Beltrán’s knee issue halted him during his best spell of the campaign and he has not been able to recapture that level since.

Before the setback he was among the few bright spots, short on goals but valuable in build-up and in pressing the opponent’s first phase.

His absence again leaves Carlos Corberán weighing whether to reinforce midfield, move Largie Ramazani inside or start with two forwards, an approach he has not used so far this season.

That two-striker option also failed to convince in the second half against Atlético de Madrid, mainly because the team lacked depth.
