Valencia’s city government has approved a new agreement on Nou Mestalla’s use, including potential 2030 FIFA World Cup matches, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties.
According to Superdeporte, the governing board backed the pact on Thursday, a move seen as another step towards the stadium hosting matches in the tournament shared by Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
Compromís spokesperson Papi Robes argued the deal benefits Valencia CF while weakening the city’s position and the public interest.
He said the council would have less real control over the venue’s use, leaving decisions subject to the club’s priorities, and that the city would be reduced to seeking permission to access a facility that should also serve a public role.
Robes also said a planned museum area for supporters has been dropped compared with earlier proposals, calling it a loss of memory, identity and social return for fans and the city.
He maintained that both free civic uses and the museum space had been developed under Ribó’s administration and agreed with Valencia CF, and questioned how so much ground was lost in the latest talks.
Robes further contended the council surrendered leverage by granting the club its licence, and concluded that María José Català accepted the club’s terms, leaving a minimal, unambitious deal without firm safeguards for the general interest.
