Valencia have suffered a setback in their plans to strengthen at right-back after a move for Thomas Meunier collapsed. The club has now revived interest in Andrés García.
The 34-year-old had reached a financial agreement to join Mestalla, with only final formalities pending. He was due in Valencia this week to sign a one-year deal with an option for a further season. The scenario changed over the weekend and the transfer will not go ahead.
Tribuna Deportiva reports that the deal fell apart after Meunier chose Sunderland's two-year offer between Sunday and Monday. He flew to England on Tuesday morning, where he also had a higher proposal from Hull City, to formalise a move for a team that finished seventh in last season's Premier League.
Unable to close that signing, Valencia have pushed alternative plans for the position back to the fore. The former Levante full-back Andrés García has re-emerged as a leading option, though the operation is difficult after firm interest from Alavés, Olympique de Lyon and, more recently, Getafe. The club has already moved to relay renewed interest.
Andrés García has been one of the most in-demand right-backs in recent weeks. Marca states that Getafe have a very advanced agreement with the player and that a move to the Coliseum appears inevitable unless he makes a radical U-turn, with Aston Villa and Getafe exchanging documents.
Even so, Valencia are not limiting their search to García, and continue to assess further right-back options before the window closes.
