The father of Valencia star Javi Guerra has on Thursday spoken out on the player’s ongoing links with La Liga rivals Atlético Madrid.
The name of midfielder Guerra of course took its place centre stage in the Spanish media headlines last summer.
This came after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that the 21-year-old had been identified as a chief transfer target on the part of the aforementioned Atlético.
At one point, a deal to send Guerra to Madrid, in fact, was considered something of a foregone conclusion.
The youngster in the end stayed put, but the interest of Diego Simeone and co. in his services is understood to remain intact.
Speaking to the media this week, the subject of his son’s future was in turn put to Guerra’s father.
And the former player and coach, during an appearance on Radio Marca (as cited by Mundo Deportivo) first went on to explain:
“It’s not the same thing to happen to you at 28 as at 21. You’ve only been in the top-flight for a year and it’s not easy to accept that. He already said it. He will leave if Valencia want him to leave, not because of him.”
Pressed specifically on the interest of Atlético, Guerra senior continued:
“He already said it clearly: ‘I’m fine here in Valencia, if they want to sell me, they will be the ones to sell me, not because I want to leave’.”
