Atletico Madrid suffered another disappointing result on Saturday as they drew 1-1 at Alaves, but things could have been worse – that’s what replays showed that their goal, scored by Giuliano Simeone, should not have counted.
Giuliano was pictured as being behind the last defender, as the law states that the Alaves player on the line becomes the “goalkeeper”, meaning that the Atleti winger was in an offside position. However, this was not picked up by the VAR team for the Mendizorroza clash, which sparked outrage.
And it led to the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) punishing Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes, who was in charge of VAR for the Alaves-Atleti match. As per Diario AS, he was dropped as the AVAR for Saturday’s late match between Real Madrid and Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alaves head coach Eduardo Coudet had every right to be furious at the decision to allow Giuliano’s goal, which was cancelled out soon after by a Carlos Vicente penalty, but he chose not to go after any of the officials involved and instead focused on his side’s performance, per Diario AS.
“I don’t want to go into those things. I prefer to stay with the fact that the team stood up to an opponent with a lot of hierarchy and that we faced the minutes in which they pressed well. After the break because of the stands, they came in better but we knew how to hold them.”
After Real Madrid’s victory over Mallorca in the late game, Xabi Alonso was also asked about the decision, which he criticised (via Diario AS).
“I was surprised. These are mistakes that should not happen. Let’s see what happens, in overuse and in use, but when VAR is used it has to be to get it right.”
