Vasco have collected only one point from their opening three Brasileirão matches, a slump not seen at São Januário for seven years after defeat to Bahia.

The campaign began with a 2-1 loss to Mirassol, followed by a 1-1 draw with Chapecoense, then a 1-0 home reverse to Bahia. That run leaves the Gigante da Colina 18th, already inside the relegation zone. According to PaponaColina, the early slide has set off alarm bells in the boardroom and among the coaching staff.

The parallels with 2019 are stark. Under Alberto Valentim, Vasco also started poorly, losing to Athletico and Atlético and drawing with Corinthians. They went winless until the seventh round, the first victory arriving in the eighth against Internacional, before a slow recovery secured Série A survival.

While a turnaround is possible, misfiring attacking play and defensive lapses in 2026 are compounding the strain for swift adjustments.
