Gonzalo Garcia was one of the few positives for Real Madrid during their tense 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, with the academy striker taking his opportunity in front of the home supporters.

The young forward opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and delivered a performance full of energy and commitment at a time when pressure around the club continues to grow following a disappointing season.

Delighted with the performance

Speaking after the match, Gonzalo admitted the atmosphere surrounding the game had not been easy following the painful defeat against Barcelona in the Clasico.

However, he insisted the squad wanted to respond strongly in front of the Madrid supporters.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance. We were coming off a match against Barça that wasn’t at all easy, and we knew that here at the Bernabeu it was going to be an intense game.

“Oviedo were going to come out and give it their all, and we tried to do the same.

“We came out determined to show that we can defend this badge here, in front of our fans. I’m very happy with the goal, but even happier with the team’s victory.”

The striker also reflected emotionally on what it meant to score again after spending time away from action.

“I feel absolutely delighted. When you’ve been out of action for a while, to come on and score a goal, and to do so here at the Bernabeu in front of all the Madrid fans, it’s always going to be special.

“I’m very grateful for all the support I always get from all the Madrid fans and my teammates too.”

Earning trust during difficult period

The goal against Oviedo marked Gonzalo’s seventh of the season and further strengthened his growing reputation inside the club.

At a time when several senior players are facing criticism from supporters, the academy graduate has become one of the few figures currently connecting positively with the Bernabeu crowd.

The youngster admitted the season has fallen below expectations, but his response highlighted a maturity that continues to impress people around the club.

“It’s been a long year and perhaps not quite as we all hoped. We need to be a bit self-critical and honest, but personally, I’m at peace with it.

“I try to work day in, day out, focus on what I can control and give my all in training so that I can then make the most of the opportunities when I take to the pitch to prove myself.

“That way, the fans can see that I’m capable of defending the badge,” he concluded.
