Víctor Muñoz will join Liverpool for 40 million as Spain’s World Cup camp continues to be punctuated by transfers, following Marc Cucurella’s swift move to Real Madrid.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Liverpool will pay the winger’s release clause shortly and Muñoz has already signed his new contract. He is currently with Luis de la Fuente’s squad in Chattanooga. The move will be Andoni Iraola’s first signing after he replaces the dismissed Arne Slot, aimed at helping to cover Mo Salah’s departure.

Osasuna will receive 20 million, with the remainder going to Real Madrid, who retained 50% of his rights.

In recent days Newcastle appeared to be leading the race. Muñoz was open to replacing Anthony Gordon after his switch to Barcelona, but the club did not press the deal. The mooted bid was 30 to 35 million, with a further 5 in add-ons.

Real Madrid held a matching option but will not exercise it. They sold 50% of his rights to Osasuna for 6 million last summer, taking their total intake to 26 million for the academy graduate. Osasuna bank 14 million net from a player who delivered 6 goals and 2 assists in one season at El Sadar.

His form earned a March call-up and he debuted in the friendly against Serbia with a goal. De la Fuente kept him in his 26 for this World Cup despite an initial injury, like Lamine and Nico Williams. He did not feature in the poor opener against Cape Verde after only a couple of training sessions.

The sale sets an Osasuna record, both for the overall 40 million and their 20 million share. Previous highs were 13 million from Atlético for the now retired Raúl García in 2007 and 12 from Athletic last summer for Jesús Areso.
