Ben Jacobs was on the London is Blue podcast today giving a big picture looks at the Chelsea project as a whole and where the club stands.
Giving an answer which sounds as though it’s coming directly from someone at the club, Jacobs pointed out that there’s a sense that the club are very close to success now, with excuses almost run out:
“We’re at a point where it’s formulated enough and evolved enough and has had enough windows that we’re beyond the ‘just wait, patient’ phase, and we’re into the ‘results now’ period,” Jacobs said.
“And I think those that are working on all of this behind the scenes, the ownership, the board, at recruitment and football level, are all just hoping for that little bit more time and patience, because they feel that the turning point in the project will come sooner rather than later.”
You can see Jacobs explain the situation in the clip embedded here, with this answer after 25 minutes:

With every passing window, the excuses made for this project – that the players are young and inexperienced and haven’t played together – get less relevant. There was talk of a 4 window project and we’re already well beyond that.
Jacobs says that expectations will finally start climbing this summer:
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Chelsea’s aims for next season aren’t just ‘top 5 and Champions League if we can get it’, but are ‘Champions League qualification as a must’, and maybe they can even feel they can get a whole lot closer to Liverpool and Manchester City.”
He also defended the club’s transfer policy so far, saying that the targeting of a striker, a centre back and a new left winger would leave Enzo Maresca with a very competitive group.
