Egypt wrapped up their Africa Cup of Nations preparations with encouraging 2-1 victory over Nigeria in international friendly on Tuesday night at Cairo International Stadium.

In match that offered both coaches final opportunity to fine-tune their squads ahead of AFCON 2025 in Morocco, Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed found the net for the Pharaohs while Chidozie Awaziem replied for the Super Eagles.

With several star names absent, Egypt relied on energy and organisation early on and they were rewarded in the 28 minute. Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” created the opening with precise delivery from the right flank allowing Mahmoud Saber to apply simple close-range finish and give the hosts the lead.

Nigeria, missing key attacking figures struggled to find rhythm in the opening exchanges but gradually grew into the contest as first half progressed.

Just before the interval, Nigeria capitalised on rare defensive lapse to restore parity. Zaidu Sanusi’s low free kick was not cleanly dealt with by Mohamed El Shenawy and Chidozie Awaziem reacted quickest at the far post to nod the rebound into the net.

Mostafa Mohamed Delivers the decisive blow

Egypt emerged from halftime with renewed intensity and regained control of the match. Their pressure paid off in the 52 minute when Mostafa Mohamed powered strike from inside the penalty area to put the Pharaohs back in front.

Notable absences on both sides

The friendly was played without several headline names. Mohamed Salah & Omar Marmoush were unavailable for Egypt having yet to join the national team camp.

Nigeria were also without their attacking talisman Victor Osimhen, allowing fringe players the chance to stake their claim ahead of the tournament.

AFCON Groups & What’s Next

Egypt will compete in Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Zimbabwe, Angola & South Africa and will open their campaign against Zimbabwe next week.

Nigeria meanwhile are drawn in Group C with Tunisia, Tanzania & Uganda and will begin their tournament against Tanzania.
