Ever since Cole Palmer’s form began to fade Moises Caicedo has been closing in as Chelsea’s favourite for player of the season. After last night, there can be no doubt.

He was brilliant for the Blues as they beat Spurs 1-0. It was notable that the Blues kept a clean sheet despite the fact that neither centre back had to make an interception or tackle.

As Colwill himself said, that’s down to one man: Moises Caicedo the midfield machine.

“He makes it so easy for us in the defence, because he stops everything before it gets to us,” the defender explained. The highlights from the match show Caicedo playing like a man possessed, sprinting forward to press and backwards to cover his teammates. One superb tackle on Wilson Odobert was a really special moment. N’Golo Kante would have been proud of the anticipation, timing and balance required to dispossess such a tricky player in full flight, right in the danger zone.

As always he was neat and tidy in possession too, constantly moving the ball quickly to midfield partner Enzo Fernandez. Caicedo even banged in a superb volley to make it 2-0, only to see it cruelly ruled out for a fractional offside in the build up.

It would have been a well deserved reward for the Ecuador star for a world class game.

There was a moment in the first half where Caicedo appeared to be injured, and that was really the only warning light on the day.

It was a stark reminder that until Dario Essugo, Lesley Ugochukwu, Andrey Santos and whoever else might be brought in this summer return, we’re short of players who can play as the more defensive option alongside Enzo.
