Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher are on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football and they did a full breakdown of the goal Chelsea conceded against Newcastle on Saturday, one of the most embarrassing pieces of defending we’ve seen in a while.

As they showed, it was a total systemic failure from the front to the back, and a lack of any responsibility from defenders.

Henry and Carragher break down awful Chelsea defending

“[Garnacho] allowed that ball to go inside, that’s exactly what you don’t want. He allowed that to happen,” Henry

“That goes back to one thing me and Thierry have been talking about,” Carragher added.

“Players are now coached to within an inch of their life, both with and without the ball… but you have to adapt on the pitch. You’ve now got Fofana at the top, he’s telling someone to do something, but he’s got to go across and do something himself… deal with it, adapt… they don’t know how to. They know something’s gone wrong, but they don’t adapt in a situation that like.”

It’s a great summary of the issues with that goal and with the hyper coached modern style of football.

In other news…

Two Chelsea players had poor games against Newcastle, and it’s clear that one of them needs to be dropped.

JP spoke in today’s press conference about “believing” against Paris tomorrow. If we’re to get anything tomorrow, he will have to step up.
