Arsenal dug deep to secure a 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
Max Dowman proved decisive for the table-toppers. His cross led to Viktor Gyokeres’ opener in the 89th minute, before he sealed the victory in stoppage time.
At 16 years and 37 days, Dowman has now become the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League history, overtaking James Vaughan, who set the initial record at 16 years and 270 days.
Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League after the game, Gyokeres praised Dowman’s decision-making.
“It’s incredible. You can see how he plays. He stays so calm and without fear every time he gets the ball.
“He takes the right decision most of the time as well and with the goal, he definitely took the right one. He’s an amazing player, it was a great goal for him and I’m so happy for him.”
Dowman’s performance also drew praise from manager Mikel Arteta, who admitted that the teenager ‘changed the game every time he got the ball‘.
The exciting teenager recorded 28 touches, two of which were in the Toffees’ box, and completed two of the four dribbles he attempted. He also made four recoveries.
Dowman’s display against Everton underlines why he is regarded as one of the best prospects in Europe.
The England youth international also holds the record as the youngest player to feature in the UEFA Champions League and the youngest ever starter for Arsenal.
