Manuel Mezquita Monzó, a prominent figure in Vila-real’s public, sporting and social life, has died aged 63. The town hall has offered condolences to his family and friends. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, his career spanned municipal office and roles at Villarreal CF.
He served as a Partido Popular councillor for two terms. From 1999 to 2003 he sat on the council under mayor Manuel Vilanova, then from 2003 to 2007 first with Vilanova and later Juan José Rubert. He led the Police and Sports departments.
Before politics he was on Villarreal CF’s board during Pascual Font de Mora’s tenure. During Fernando Roig’s first two years he worked as head of security at El Madrigal.
His name became closely linked to two pillars of city life, the town hall and the yellow club. He was also the uncle of Alberto Ibáñez, a Compromís deputy in the Congress.
His funeral will be held on Monday at 16.00 at the Tanatorio San José. His death has prompted widespread tributes in Vila-real, recalling his service to local politics, sport and the community.
