Villarreal announced at 22:00 on Thursday the signing of American defender Alex Freeman to bolster a depleted back line after Juan Foyth’s serious injury. It follows the loan arrival of winger Alfón González earlier in the window.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the fee is three point two million euros plus a possible further two million if difficult variables are met. Freeman has signed until June 2032, a six-and-a-half-year deal, and had been on the club’s radar since last summer.
Arriving now will help him adapt to a new club, language and playing style, and he will link up with fellow MLS alumnus Tani Oluwaseyi. Freeman is a powerful, quick defender strong in duels, and he has scored six goals in 42 appearances, a notable return for his position. He was named MLS young player in December.
He is the son of former NFL wide receiver Antonio Freeman, a Super Bowl winner with the Green Bay Packers in 1997. In his youth he played basketball, American football and football. He said he had a secret love for football and initially hesitated to tell his father he was not pursuing the gridiron.
His mother, Rochelle, supports Liverpool and jokingly calls him her little Trent Alexander-Arnold. He has two younger brothers, Tyler and Josh, who also play football.
After representing the United States at youth level, Freeman has 13 senior caps and once scored twice in a friendly against Uruguay. He is in the frame for next summer’s World Cup.
