Villarreal and Juventus clash in a crucial Champions League encounter on Wednesday as both sides search for their first victory in this season’s tournament.
The Yellow Submarine will be desperate to bounce back from their opening defeat to Spurs, while the Italian giants look to build on their dramatic draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Villarreal face several key absences ahead of this Champions League encounter. Juan Foyth remains sidelined with a muscle injury and is not expected to return until late October.
Gerard Moreno continues his recovery from a hamstring problem and is unlikely to be available until early October. The Spanish striker has been dealing with various injuries throughout the year but could potentially make a return before the October international break.
Logan Costa and Pau Cabanes are long-term absentees following cruciate ligament injuries, while Willy Kambwala and Ayoze Pérez are also unavailable with separate problems. These absences leave manager Marcelino with fewer options in key areas as he prepares for this vital European fixture.
Juventus will travel to Spain without two key players after confirming that Gleison Bremer and Khéphren Thuram have not been included in the squad. Both players were substituted during the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta due to injury concerns. Thuram is considered the biggest doubt after missing Tuesday’s training session due to a calf strain. Despite Bremer training normally with the group, neither player has made the trip to Villarreal.
On a positive note, Francisco Conceição has recovered from a minor injury and has been included in the travelling squad after missing the draw against Atalanta. Edon Zhegrova has also been called up for this crucial fixture. Arkadiusz Milik remains sidelined with a shin injury, while Fabio Miretti continues to miss out with a hamstring problem.
Marcelino’s side have shown excellent form domestically of late, winning their last three La Liga matches to maintain their strong start to the season. The Yellow Submarine currently sit third in La Liga with 16 points from seven matches, trailing only Barcelona and Real Madrid. Their most recent victory came with a narrow 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at home, secured by Alberto Moleiro’s 77th-minute strike. Prior to that, they claimed an impressive 2-1 away victory at Sevilla.
However, their European campaign began disappointingly with a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. Goalkeeper Luiz Júnior’s fourth-minute own goal proved decisive in a match where Villarreal failed to register a single shot on target. Despite this setback, their home European record remains strong, having lost only one of their last nine home matches in European competition.
Igor Tudor’s Juventus remain unbeaten in all competitions this season but have struggled to turn draws into victories recently. The Old Lady have been held in each their last three matches, including their thrilling 4-4 Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund. In that remarkable encounter, Juve recovered from going 4-2 down to salvage a dramatic point with two stoppage-time goals from Dušan Vlahović and Lloyd Kelly.
In Serie A they followed up their impressive 4-3 win over Inter Milan with consecutive 1-1 draws against Hellas Verona and Atalanta. Despite their recent inability to secure victories, Juventus have shown resilience and attacking quality, particularly in their ability to fight back from difficult positions.
