Real Madrid picked up three points at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on matchday 27 of La Liga, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior were on target for the hosts in the first half as their strikes in the first half were all it took to secure the win, while Pedro Diaz’s goal for the visitors in stoppage time of the opening period only proved to be a consolation.

The Whites were not at their best in Sunday’s meeting, although they did fulfil their main objective, which was to secure all three points. Los Blancos have now overtaken Atletico Madrid in the La Liga standings after Diego Simeone’s men lost to Getafe earlier in the matchday.

The two Madrid rivals face off in the coming week in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League but before that, here is how Carlo Ancelotti’s players fared versus Rayo Vallecano.

Player Ratings

Andriy Lunin – 7/10

Lunin made a couple of decent stops in the first half and distributed the ball well when Madrid tried to build from behind.

Lucas Vazquez – 7/10

Vazquez looked good throughout the game, especially defensively, as he dealt well with Pep Chavarria. He could have done more going forward, however.

Raul Asencio – 6/10

An off day for Asencio as he was troubled by Alvaro Garcia’s movement in the final third. The 21-year-old let the Rayo striker get into the box a number of times and nearly scored an own goal in the first half too.

David Alaba – 8/10

A great display at the back by Alaba after a poor outing at Real Betis last weekend. He led Madrid from the back, completing 89% of his passes, making three blocks, one interception and one clearance.

Fran Garcia – 7.5/10

Fran Garcia did not have much work defensively as Adrian Embarba struggled to be impactful. The left-back made good runs in the attacking third but was usually too isolated higher up the pitch to have any meaningful impact.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 8/10

Tchouameni was fantastic in a deeper-lying midfield role. He conducted play well between the defenders and midfielders, completing 92% of his passes. He also won six duels and made four clearances while defending.

Luka Modric – 8/10

Modric also excelled in his role in midfield. He created four chances during the match, more than any other player, and was credited with the assists for Vinicius’ goal.

Jude Bellingham – 7/10

Not the best display by Bellingham with the ball although he performed well when the team was without possession. He won as many as 14 duels and made four tackles during the game.

Rodrygo Goes – 7.5/10

Another display by Rodrygo that will go under the radar due to him not scoring but the Brazilian made the right wing his very own by tormenting Alfonso Espino and linking the other two forwards well.

Kylian Mbappe – 8/10

Mbappe scored the first goal of the game and could have had another had he not shot straight at Augusto Batalla in a one-on-one situation. He was not at his best but got the job done.

Vinicius Junior – 8.5/10

With a goal as well as chance that led to Mbappe’s strike, Vinicius was arguably the best player on the pitch and also the only attacker who seemed determined to make a difference in the second half.

Substitutes

Federico Valverde – 6.5/10

Valverde played the final 20 minutes but had little to do in midfield. He had only 12 passes in his cameo off the bench.

Eduardo Camavinga – 6/10

As with Valverde, Camavinga was brought on just to rest some of the starters. With the match in its final stages, there was not much work for the Frenchman to do.

Brahim Diaz – N/A

Brahim was not on the pitch for enough time as he played just the final four minutes.
