Virgínia says she celebrated Vini Jr’s World Cup goal against Morocco despite the couple ending their relationship shortly before the tournament.
The former Flamengo forward struck Brazil’s only goal in a 1-1 draw with Morocco in their opening match.
“I was very happy, I had imagined Vini would score. I was cheering a lot for him and for Brazil. When it went in I could only jump and celebrate,” she said on a Rede Globo programme.
On 15 May, Virginia Fonseca announced the break-up in a social media post, thanking him for their time together and wishing the player happiness. She said she chooses to live authentically, ends relationships with care when they no longer make sense, and asked for respect as they turn the page.
Brazil face Haiti on Friday 19, the second round of the group stage, at 21:30 Brasília time in the United States. The match will be shown across multiple platforms in Brazil, including Globo, SBT, Sportv, N Sports, GeTV and CazéTV.
Brazil sit third in the group on one point, behind Scotland, who beat Haiti 1-0, and Morocco, who also have one point but lead on tiebreaker.
