During the warm-up at the City Ground, home fans sang the 'Geordie Maradona' chant. Before heading down the tunnel, the squad posed with him as he held a shirt bearing number eight and 'Mum'.

Pereira said: "He wants to play. It was his decision, he wants to be on the pitch with his teammates. He wants to help the club, even for himself I think it was a good decision."

Forest were also boosted as Murillo and Chris Wood were passed fit after being substituted in midweek. Wood had taken a heavy tackle early on, to the opposite knee from his recent surgery.

Murillo went down late and made way. Callum Hudson-Odoi also came off then, he is not in the squad this afternoon and was seen on crutches at the City Ground.

Pereira added of Wood: "It was not serious and he is in a condition to play at this level."
