SV Werder Bremen had hoped for a better start to the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. Instead, the Green-Whites were defeated 4-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt and will return home empty-handed. WERDER.DE gathered the post-match reaction from the team.
Head coach Horst Steffen: "We prepared our attacking play decently, but then weren’t able to get the movement, the passing or the shot right in the final third, because we weren't decisive enough when it mattered. After that, we made mistakes and Frankfurt scored out of nowhere - that's where you see their quality, when they make something out of nothing. Of course, we understood this beforehand, but we still expected more."
Captain Marco Friedl: “We were on the back foot across the 90 minutes; Eintracht outclassed us in every respect. Even then, we gifted them three goals, which is why it’s a very bitter situation. We had a good week of training, in which the coach explained a lot about what we would come up against, which we ultimately did. We had so much space but just didn’t trust ourselves to make use of it, and then we made mistakes when we did try.”
Niklas Stark: "We did play well in phases, where we gave glimpses of the way we want to play. That just wasn't enough across 90 minutes. We gave Frankfurt too much space in transition and ultimately they made the most of their chances. For that reason, we deserved to lose today."
Senne Lynen: "It always hurts to lose, and so my conclusion is not a positive one. It was full throttle in the first five minutes, as we had expected, but we got through that and then really grew into the game. We had good moments, but ultimately it wasn’t enough. We know that we need to improve on everything.”
